The Guardians of the National Cemetery Foundation has initiated a project with the Department of Veterans Affairs (Dept of VA), the National Cemetery Association (NCA), and Washington Crossing National Cemetery (WCNC), to donate and install a statue of General George Washington within the cemetery.
The statue of Gen. Washington, in a kneeling position, will sit upon a base approximately 3’ tall. The statue itself will be approximately 9’ tall from the General’s knee on the ground to the top of his head. This statue will be similar to the one on the grounds of the Freedom Foundation in Valley Forge, PA.
The proposed location for this statue is the peninsula between the exit drive of Committal Shelter #1 and the entrance drive to Committal Shelter #2, facing the main flag pole.
We are partnering with the Williamson College of the Trades in Media, PA for the base. Those students are in the process of designing the base and surrounding grounds for this project.
We have completed the initial required administrative work for this Non-Standardized Commemorative Work and have received approval to proceed to the application phase. We have had numerous meetings and phone conversations with Dept of VA and NCA representatives with encouraging response. The above referenced application will include the necessary drawings and engineering certifications. We hope to submit that entire package in early 2021.
When we have final approval from the Dept of VA and the NCA, we will then commission Mr. Darren Hussy of Newark, DE as the sculptor (bigbronze.com). He has experience with both large bronze sculptures and the U.S. government. Following final approval and commissioning of the sculptor, delivery of the piece will take approximately one year.
A rough estimate as to cost at this time is $150,000.00.
